Teams of four (4) students representing their high schools are invited to compete in a Pennsylvania regional competition. In Pennsylvania, there are two levels of competition: Adam Smith (for advanced economics students); David Ricardo (general economics and business students). At each level of competition, student teams answer rigorous questions on microeconomics, macroeconomics, international economics and current economic events. Students answer questions both individually, and as a team. The final round at each level will feature the top 2 teams in each division facing off in a fast-answer round. Prizes and a chance to compete state-wide are offered.

MODERATOR

David Iwinski Jr. is a Board Member for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. He is also Managing Director of Jin Fu Consulting LLC, a firm that assists cross border mergers and acquisitions between China and North America. Mr. Iwinski also hosts a weekly segment on The American Entrepreneur radio show (WMNY 1360) as The International Capitalist. Prior to this position Mr. Iwinski held several Chief Executive Officer positions which include Denex Labs LLC, a Pittsburgh-based global dental laboratory, Acusis LLC a medical technology, software and transcription company.


PANELISTS

Lawrence Loh is Resident Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Music Director of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic and Music Director of the Pittsburgh Youth Orchestra. Since his appointment in 2005 the orchestra has flourished artistically, defining its reputation as one of the finest regional orchestras in the country. Prior to PSO, Mr. Loh held the positions of Assistant and Associate Conductor of the Dallas Symphony from 2001-2005. Mr. Loh received his Artist Diploma in Orchestral Conducting from Yale in 1998 where he earned the Eleazar De Carvalho Prize which is given to the most outstanding conductor in the Yale graduating class.

James A. Wilkinson, is the Vice Chair of the Board for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. He has held positions with Society for Contemporary Craft as Executive Director; Meritcare Inc. as Executive Vice President and General Counsel and Chief Financial Officer; Buchanan Ingersoll P.C. as Chairman of the Health Law Section; USX Corporation as Senior Financial Analyst and Manager of Product and Supply Labor Relations; Cost of Living Council as Deputy Executive Secretary; Office of Management and Budget as Legislative Analyst – Environment and Energy. He is a veteran of the United States Navy.

Scott Michael is Senior Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Michael began his business career as the first Finance Manager of the newly renovated Benedum Center in 1987. After two years at Benedum Center, Mr. Michael joined the Pittsburgh Symphony first as Controller and then as Chief Financial Officer.

Jim Barthen serves as the Vice President of Public Affairs for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and is responsible for public relations, government relations, design and image. During Barthen’s tenure the working business relationship with the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance (PRA), an affiliate of the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, has grown over the past several years. This unique partnership with the PRA to leverage the world-class orchestra to market Pittsburgh region to potential investors is a first-in-the-nation business model.
