2013 Pittsburgh RBI Internship Posting

It is with great pleasure that I share with you today an available internship that is coordinated through a partnership with the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Boys and Girls Club of Western PA. This internship will be geared around working with community youth baseball and softball development. The student selected will have a hands-on experience that will challenge them while teaching them a variety of business, communications, and sports related items that will support their education. Please see below for the  formal internship posting with more details and how to apply.

It would be greatly appreciated if you could share this unique experience with students and/or professionals that may have access to students. We hope to have this person secured prior to the start of the year to assure the student selected can complete a full semester of learning & development. Students that require college credit for an internship are encouraged to apply but it is not required. Interested students should send a cover letter and resume to my attention for consideration. This internship plans to run January through mid-May with another summer posting becoming available This position will be reposted for summer applicants sometime in February.

POSITION: Pittsburgh Reviving Baseball Inner Cities (RBI)Internship 

REPORTS TO: Boys and Girls Club (in conjunction with the Pittsburgh Pirates)

STATUS: Part-time


SUMMARY:

This is a Boys and Girls Club of Western PA internship that will work in conjunction with the Pittsburgh Pirates with the execution of the Pittsburgh RBI youth baseball and softball program. Internship will provide hands on experience in the coordination of youth baseball and softball for various Pittsburgh and surrounding communities. Intern will directly assist with growth, development, and execution of all function related Pittsburgh RBI.

ABOUT PITTSBURGH RBI:

The Pittsburgh RBI (Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities) program began in 1994 as a part of Major League Baseball's international RBI initiative. During the 2012 season, Pittsburgh RBI included more than 900 area youth in 11 different communities throughout the greater Pittsburgh region.

Pittsburgh RBI Mission Statement

The mission of the Pittsburgh Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) program is to increase participation and interest in baseball and softball among underserved youth through instruction and competitive play, while encouraging youth to achieve academically, demonstrate good sportsmanship and contribute positively to the community.

Throughout the summer, Pittsburgh RBI teams competed in the City of Pittsburgh Department of Parks and Recreation BIG League. In addition to regular season play, three Pittsburgh RBI All-Star teams, including a Junior Boys team (13-15 years old) and a Senior Boys team (16-18 years old) traveled to Harrisburg, PA to compete in an MLB-sponsored regional tournament. Youth participants in the Pittsburgh RBI program also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs throughout the season.

REQUIREMENTS:

• Candidates must be enrolled in an accredited institution
• Candidates majoring in Business Administration, Communications, Sports Management., or related area • Junior, Senior, or Graduate level students
• Valid Driver’s License
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications (Word,
Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)

DESIRED:
• Community/Volunteer Experience. 


RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Work with the Boys and Girls Club to develop a Pittsburgh RBI strategic plan that includes targeted relationship development, outreach initiatives, marketing opportunities, and an educational program.
• Develop a team application process which outlines team responsibilities and benefits.
• Gather and analyze program data including participant demographics, contact information,
association site data, and all coaches’ information.
• Assist in the management of the current equipment inventory and coordinate the process of distribution of equipment based on the community requests and needs.
• Support in the liaison process between the Boys and Girls Club, and groups such as: Wilkinsburg baseball Association, BIG League, Braddock Baseball, McKeesport Youth Baseball Organization, etc.
• Work with the Pittsburgh RBI Advisory Committee to develop strategic initiatives and provide overall assistance to the committee.
• Provide support with the selection of education programs to be used in the communities and assist with the implementation of the “Train the Trainer “program.
• Facilitate group outings to PNC Park for players, families, and volunteers.
• Assist with the planning
and execution of an event for players & families at PNC Park. • Provide support with coaches and youth baseball and softball clinics.
• Represent the organization at Pittsburgh RBI games and community functions.
• All other duties assigned by the Boys and Girls Club
& Pittsburgh Pirates.
