    Twice a year, the School of Business co-sponsors the RMU CEO Lecture Series featuring a CEO to speak to members of the community. The guest speaker this time around is the President and CEO of Highmark, William Winkenwerder, Jr., M.D. His presentation is about Transforming Health Care. Brief Speaker Bio:

    Dr. Bill Winkenwerder is CEO and president of Highmark, a diversified health and wellness company, serving 34 million Americans.

    Dr. Winkenwerder is one of the most influential leaders in American health care, and he is an expert on national health policy and the economics of health care.

    From 2001 to 2007, he was the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs with responsibility for a $40 billion budget, 132,000 personnel and 9.2 million beneficiaries. Before that he served in senior leadership positions at Blue Cross of Massachusetts, Prudential Healthcare and Emory University. He also practiced primary care internal medicine.

    Before joining Highmark, Dr. Winkenwerder served as chairman and CEO of The Winkenwerder Company, a health care consulting firm based in Alexandria, Va.

    Dr. Winkenwerder has been an advocate for preventive health care, evidence-based medicine and electronic health records and he has worked closely with many of America’s major employers on health cost issues. He also brought many innovations and improved business practices to government during his tenure at the Department of Defense. Dr. Winkenwerder advocates for engaging consumers in their health care and for improving public health. He has been an adviser to two presidential candidates and a regular contributor to various media outlets.

    A graduate of Davidson College and the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, Dr. Winkenwerder is board certified in internal medicine and received his MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Deeply committed to improving and reforming health care, he is a visionary leader of one of the nation’s largest diversified health and wellness companies whose views are widely regarded.
